A Stokvel is an informal and collaborative money-raising scheme also known as a ROSCA (Rotating Savings and Credit Association). Stokvel are set up within communities of friends, family members, colleagues, interest and church groups.

What is a Stokvel?

Stockvels are informal savings groups or syndicates in which funds are contributed in rotation, allowing participants and has been used as one of the primary methods of raising money in South Africa for many decades. It is generally accepted that the term "stokvel" originated from English-speaking settler farmers' "stock fairs" of the early 19th century in Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Members won’t earn interest as you get back what you pay in (minus the fees you earn) but it’s a far cheaper way of borrowing money than taking a bank loan or paying interest on credit cards. How do I raise money in a Stokvel?

A Stokvel works when the community group members all agree to monthly installment payments over a fixed period. For example, 10 members each decide to pay in R500 every month for 10 months to raise R5,000. Each month one person in that group gets awarded the R5,000. Everyone continues to pay the R500 until every member of that group is given their money back. This means 9/10 people in the group will have their money sooner.
